When the 77-acre parcel was purchased in May 1988, the brush had overgrown the property to a height of about 8'. Much of it had trunks 2-3" in diameter. Several months of back-breaking work by immigrant workers using machetes resulted in the former vineyard trellis and drip irrigation systems being visible again. However, only a few vines (Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot noir) remained alive and they were severely stunted. The irrigation system, both under- and above-ground, had many leaks. By 1997, the brush had grown back, though not quite as dense nor large as before. During the summer of 1997, the areas between the vine rows were disked and after several passes, all of the brush and weeds disappeared ... except for the area in the vine rows, under the trellis wires. This was begun to be cleaned up with a brush-cutter. Also, the road along the perimeter fence was cleared with a bulldozer and more machete work. Then we could perform fence repairs and fence heightening to discourage the deer from coming in. |
