The Winter of 1997-1998 provided El Nino weather, including significantly above average rainfall. As a result, the workers were not able to get into the vineyard in April-May. Beginning in July, the trellis system and drip irrigation was installed for 4 blocks. 1,468 vines were planted in August 1998, predominantly clone 115 on 3309 rootstock, with about 5% of Jensen and Mt. Eden clones interspersed. The second half of the planting was done with questionable vines. Sure enough, the next Spring nearly all of the last 850 were dead and had to be replanted. Also in August, the entire vineyard was disked in between the vine rows. |
