Muns Vineyard

2006

2006 began as yet another unusual year weather-wise.  Here at the end of March, we've still not had bud-break.  In all prior years, bud-break occurred between 10-15 March.  However, this is actually good news because the colder weather is keeping the vines dormant and therefore safe from the typical April frosts.  Pruning and in-row weeding is all finished.  We need to anchor the end posts and install catch wires on three new acres.  Brush is being cleared from the vineyard perimeter to provide better tractor turn-around clearance.  Rusty Gaffney of The Pinot File visited the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA in March and wrote a two part article.  Part 2 talks of Muns Vineyard.  Tony Craig and Ed Muns presented a clonal tasting at Pinot Paradise on 26 March 2006.  Two Muns Vineyard wines were featured at the event and mentioned in the San Jose Mercury News article about Pinot Paradise on 5 April 2006.  And, then, all of a sudden it was mid-September and we harvested 24+ tons of exceptional quality fruit on three different days across an 8-day period.  10 tons (clones 115, 667 & 777) went to Soquel Vineyards and 14 tons (clones 114, 115, 667 & 777) was crushed at Silver Mountain Vineyards.  The Silver Mountain wine will come out under three labels: Silver Mountain Vineyards, Sonnet Winecellars and Muns Vineyard.  Brix was 25-26 across the blocks, acid was a bit low and tannins were strong.  Most important the fruit and the seeds were well ripened and the wine is superb.
