1999 Archive

25 December 1999 -- We have had such a warm Fall and Winter so far that the vines came out of dormancy and began growing leaves!  They are really confused and hope they aren't too disappointed when the inevitable cold weather comes during the next few months.

15 November 1999 -- The rain came before the cover crop could be drilled in, so we will just have to rely on the native grasses and the crimson clover planted last year.  The grow tubes are off and the vines tied to their grape stake to protect them from the high winds that come in the Winter.

1 November 1999 -- This season's planting was finished on 22 October and the vines are beginning to cane out.  Even though the weather is cooling down somewhat, we are still getting enough warm hours during the day to keep the vines going.  A few are still pushing their shoots out!  The first rain lightly occurred overnight on Wednesday, 27 October.  Herbicide spraying was done on 30 October and cultivation with the special "Perfecta II" harrow was begun on 31 October.  Soon the grow tubes will be removed for the Winter and the fragile trunks tied to the stakes.  In mid-November the cover crop will be drilled into the areas between and around the vine rows.  This will control erosion during the rainy season and provide nitrogen to the soil during next year's disking.

13 August 1999 -- The power auger arrived and is being put to good use as we continue in this new block.  It is slow going, but excellent exercise!  It's like an all day weight training sessions for Ed's upper body.  Mary helps install the drip line, mix the fertilizer (bone meal, blood meal, potash and time-release nutrient pellets) with the dirt removed from the 10" x 3' holes, and finally with the planting of the green-growing vines.  Grow tubes are installed over the vines immediately to create individual green houses for each plant to accelerate the seasons growth.  The tubes also protect the vines when the vine rows are sprayed with Round Up to control grasses and weeds.

4 July 1999 -- Our second year's planting began with French clone 777 on root stock 420A.  It is slow going as we dig holes by hand while the power auger is still on order.  After about 70 vines, we stopped and will wait for the auger!  We did plant two table grape vines at the ends of the first two new rows that were given to us at the ASEV annual meeting the week before in Reno.
