French Clones

These are the specific clones that are grafted onto the root stocks and produce the vegetation and fruit of each plant.  All of the clones used have originated in France and have been quarantined at UC Davis before being certified here in the US.  Beginning in 2001, the vines planted will even be certified by the French authority ENTAV.

Root Stocks

All root stocks derive from native American grapevines which are resistant to phyloxera, a destructive root insect.

Inventory

We are planting a variety of clones and root stocks in order to provide the winemaker the ability to blend complex wines.  There is a single clone-root stock combination planted within each 1-acre block.  With a row spacing of 10' and a vine spacing of 3.5', this nets out to 1,244 vines per acre.  The first 2.5 acres were planted with a vine spacing of 7' and we have gone back and inter-planted additional vines to yield the 3.5' spacing consistently throughout the vineyard.
